How to Keep Cat Hair Off Furniture

Cat on couchOur cats work hard to maintain their silky fur coats, and we do everything we can to keep them in tip-top shape. Regular brushing is a must, especially for our long-haired friends. But despite all your attempts to prevent it, that cat fur finds its way onto the furniture. No matter how much you love your feline, the fur remnants she leaves on sofas and blankets can be unsightly and irritating. Here at And My Cat we've got a few tips and tricks to share with our community of cat owners. While you'll probably always find cat hair clinging to furniture as long as you've got a kitty-in-residence, there are easy solutions for cleaning and keeping it under control.

You'll first want to consider fur-resistant fabrics and covers:

Fleece: A lot of cat owners try out special fabrics to keep fur off furniture. One of the best fabrics to use in a cat-centric household is fleece. Unlike woven throws and Afghans, fleece doesn't get knotted or frayed. It doesn't need to be sewn around the edges to prevent unraveling. You can easily match it with upholstery on your existing furniture and it's tough enough to go through the washer and dryer.

Quilted Suede Furniture Covers: If you're going the furniture-coverings route, another great option is a quilted suede furniture cover. They're stylish, thick, comfortable and machine-washable. You can lay them on top of cushions, backs and arms of furnishings. Give your room a makeover and keep it protected from fur, as well as any other spills or accidents that might occur. Here's one cover we've had a lot of success with.

If you'd rather not purchase coverings for your furniture, there are a variety of efficient methods for cleaning off the hair your cat leaves behind:

Reusable Lint Brush: A simple lint brush is one of the most effective tools on the market for banishing those cat hairs from the living room. The Sticky Buddy™ is a good option.

Handheld Rubber Squeegee: Most pet supply stores carry these hair removal devices, which work by sucking the fur out of fabric and gathering it into clumps that you can pick up with little effort.

Carpet Rake: This magical little tool is better than a vacuum for ridding your rugs and carpets of fur. It reaches deep below the surface to pull out cat hair, and some rakes, such as this model, come with a convenient pole extension.

Pledge Fabric Sweeper: This product is simply fabulous for pulling kitty fur out of fabrics. Just brush it back and forth and watch the hair disappear. We also love that the new design is reusable!
