On June 4, the MA House of Representatives passed H.4114, allowing the hunting of deer with bows and arrows on Sundays the last three months of the calendar year.
Sunday hunting has been illegal here for 100 years. And a poll indicates that 86% of Massachusetts residents want it to stay that way.
But this expanded hunting bill appears to be on the fast track to becoming law.
TAKE A MINUTE–OR LESS–NOW
TO PROTECT INNOCENT ANIMALS
H.4114 has been sent to the Senate. If passed–as expected–it will go back to the House for final approval. The Senate is in session today (June 5), and the bill could come up. Beacon Hill Moves quickly when it wants to.
That's why you must appeal to your
State Senator AND State Rep (Beacon Hill not Capitol Hill) NOW.
1) Make 2 brief, polite calls: 1 to the office of your MA State Senator AND 1 to your State Representative (Beacon Hill not Capitol Hill). Calls are quick, easy and more effective than emails.

2) Tell staff you want the Senator (Representative) to reject H.4114 because Sunday hunting expands animal cruelty and poses increased danger to humans. Let him/her know you'll be following the bill, and provide your name and address to show you’re a constituent. Scroll down for talking points.
3) If you get voicemail, leave the above message—but call back till you speak with staff. Voicemail messages can be accidentally deleted.
4) Ask your faith leader to contact his/her Senator too. Sunday, the Christian Sabbath, is a day of peace and reflection, not killing. You also can have your congregation submit a letter opposing this ill-advised legislation to Senate President Therese Murray and House Speaker Robert DeLeo.
Online petitions do NOT influence lawmakers. You must take action.
WHY SHOULD LAWMAKERS REJECT H.4114?
1) Bow-and-arrow hunting is particularly cruel.
- A report summarizing 24 studies of bow hunting demonstrated there is little chance that deer die instantly when struck.
- More typically, bow hunters take an average of 14 shots to kill an animal, and there is a 54% wounding and crippling rate.
- For every deer killed, another is wounded and runs off only to die hours, days or even weeks later, all the while in pain, defenseless against further attacks by natural predators.
- The inaccuracy inherent in bow hunting is demonstrated by professional archers. Olympic-class archers hit the “bulls eye” only part of the time—even under ideal conditions with no moving object and no foliage between them.

2) Hunting on Sundays—a family day for many people—deprives adults and children of the opportunity to enjoy nature without risk of being shot by a hunter.
3) Bow-hunting increases the risk of injury or death to people who live or walk nearby. The sound of a bullet being fired alerts us to danger so we can take precautions. Bows do their damage quietly.
